Nudging is Ineffective When Attitudes Are Unsupportive: An Example from a Natural Field Experiment

For security reasons, employees of a Dutch local government department needed to wear an identifying lanyard with their employee badge, but compliance this policy was low. Two nudges increase were evaluated in pre-registered natural field experiment using pre-post design, and qualitative survey. Bayesian inference provides insufficient support for the effectiveness nudges. While more respondents judged positively than negatively, there substantial negative judgment incomprehension both some finding paternalistic. We hypothesize that ineffective because they failed change attitudes about policy, led reactance among employees. Implications nudging within organizations are discussed.
